Randy Miller of PhillyBurbs.com writes that the Philadelphia Phillies are likely to make a run at Red Sox starting pitcher Curt Schilling and Yankees closer Mariano Rivera.
Also, according to Miller, the Phillies are not optimistic they’ll re-sign All-Star center fielder Aaron Rowand, who is weeks away from free agency and seeking a large payday on the heels of a career year in 2007. Phillies management had a recent chat with Rowand’s agent, Craig Landis and discovered that Rowand is seeking a six-year, $84 million contract. That equals out to $14 million per season. The Phillies believe Rowand is valued at $10 million and around a three-year contract.
The team is also still believed to be open to trading outfielder Pat Burrell, who has one year at $14 million remaining on his six-year, $50-million contract. Burrell finished off the season with a strong second half likely boosting his trade value.
The Phillies also informed catcher Rod Barajas and infielder Abraham Nunez that the club would not be exercising their options for the 2008 season.
